Make Me a Superhero:

Every hero has an origin story, so pick yours and suit up! Kids can pick a cape, decorate a mask, and get their own superhero logo, all of which they are welcome to debut on our Cosplay Runway.

Re-Awakenings: Disney's Gargoyles 30th Anniversary Panel:

Thirty years ago, a new type of hero hit the airwaves as part of the Disney Afternoon: stone statues called Gargoyles who came to life at night to fight crime! Blending history, mythology, sci-fi, and romance, Disney's Gargoyles ran for 78 episodes, boasted a Marvel Comics tie-in, a video game, and toys. Now, at Dynamite, the Gargoyles live again! Meet Joseph Rybandt, Editorial Director at Dynamite Entertainment, the publisher of Gargoyles record-setting revival, and other panelists for a discussion of the show's history, its current success in comic book form at Dynamite, and its future in the recently announced live-action Disney+ reboot!

Emmy and Ringo award winning cartoonist, Dean Haspiel, will talk about his experience with print comics, webcomics, and Kickstarters. He’ll also delve into what it's like to produce franchise comics versus creator owned comics, and the state of the industry with moderator Ed Catto.

Webtoon: The Future of Comics:

Webtoon is a fantastic platform for people around the world to write their own comics with a diverse range of stories and art styles from all around the world, besides the traditional superhero story. It’s a completely new strain of stories in a reinvented medium in a modern world where comics are at the forefront of pop culture. Webtoon is a great reflection of the globalization of the comics world and this panel will greatly reflect. Join in as we learn just what makes them so great and how they’re growing in the future.

Megaton Man’s 40th Anniversary—1984 to 2024!:

Over a four-decade-long career, cartoonist-creator Don Simpson has drawn everything from King Kong to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles—but he’s still best known for his satirical superhero Megaton Man. Celebrating forty years since the debut of Megaton Man #1 in December 1984, the Man of Molecules went on to team up with the Savage Dragon, normalman, the Flaming Carrot, and even The Tick—a character inspired in part by Megaton Man. Don will look back on the one-shot that turned into a series, mini-series, and an ever-expanding universe of Bizarre Heroes, and now, the Multimensions of alternate realities! Don will also preview The Complete Megaton Man Universe Volume I, a 600-page omnibus collecting the 1980s comics in a lavish hardbound format, coming this year from Fantagraphics Underground!

A Hypothesis on Child Abuse in Grendel: Devil by the Deed:

The original Grendel series featured the ruthless crime boss, Hunter Rose. He was violent and amoral in all ways except one: he would not accept child abuse within his criminal territory. This becomes a center feature of the story when he adopts a young girl after rescuing her from an abuser; this girl later arranges for his death. I will analyze clues in the series that could lead to the conclusion that Hunter Rose was abused as a child himself.

Editing Comics 101:

What does a comic book editor actually do? Find out in a panel that demystifies the all-seeing, all-knowing mad scientist in charge of some your favorite comics. Former DC/Vertigo editor Shelly Bond has thrown red ink at 25,000+ comic book pages and creators including Neil Gaiman (The Sandman), Grant Morrison (The Invisibles) and Sanford Greene (Bitter Root). Bond deconstructs the process of making comics in this illuminating panel about the ultimate art form.

Ever wish you could have Batman pose for a drawing? Or sketch Ariel as she dances on her two new human feet? Well, then this is the activity for you! Join members of IC Art Club as they offer live demos for how to improve your figure drawing (or learn for the first time!) using Ithacon’s very own cosplayers as live models!

Prequels, Sequels, Reboots, and Their Place in Horror Franchises:

Taughannock Room
Since the dawn of cinema, films have been being reimagined, remade, rebooted, and remastered. This has always happened more frequently with horror films. Starting with Universal Monsters leading up to current horror franchises such as Scream, we’ll discuss the history, importance, and current use of this practice in the horror genre. Is it helping or harming the genre? Where would the horror genre and community be without this continuation of stories? Why do horror movies have more sequels than most movie genres? This is what will be discussed and possibly answered in this panel.

AHOY COMICS 2024:

It's shaping up to be a big year for Syracuse-based AHOY Comics as they launch: BABS, a sword-and-satire epic by Garth Ennis (co-creator of The Boys) and artist Jacen Burrows; TOXIC AVENGER, inspired by the live-action movies and animated TV series; DEADWEIGHTS, a super-villain buddy comedy by Tyrone Finch and Sebastian Piriz! Learn about these new projects and recurring series like MY BAD, PROJECT: CRYPTID and THE WRONG EARTH from publisher Hart Seely, editor-in-chief Tom Peyer, and special guests.

B&W and Read all over: The Enduring Allure of Warren Comics:

In the Silver and Bronze Ages, comics were more than just 4 color funnies. Warren Publishing was the trailblazer of oversized black & white magazine sized treasures, filled with Horror, SF and more. Warren showcased all the best artists too! Join Warren alumna Louise Simons and horror writer Eric Machan Howd and moderator Lily Collins for a deep dive into the glory – and gory - days of Warren.

65 Years in the Twilight Zone:

2024 marks the 65 anniversary of the debut of one of the most influential series of science fiction and fantasy to ever air on television: The Twilight Zone. 2024 will also mark the 100th birthday of The Twilight Zone’s creator, Rod Serling. Nick Parisi, author of ROD SERLING: HIS LIFE, WORK, AND IMAGINATION, explores the massive influence that the series has had on popular culture.

Swimming with the (publishing) Sharks in A Wave Blue World:

Some say independent publishing is harder than ever, but A Wave Blue World shows us all how to fight the good fight with a tireless entrepreneurial passion and a creative spark. Join Co-publisher Tyler Chin-Tanner and Production Designer Pete Carlesson for a look at A Wave Blue World’s upcoming plans, including the debut of Mezo: The Trial of Roden.

Dive into a behind the scenes look at the electrifying world of WWE. This panel will focus on the writing and production of wrestlings great moments and how they are achieved today. New releases of the latest comics are a big deal nowadays and news travels fat in this digital age. Come join as Bob Harrison of Pop Culture Squad and The Dollar Bin Bandits as they unite to discuss the comic book press realm. They’ll discuss how comic news has changed over the decades and what they do now to promote the newest projects in comics. From DC and Marvel all the way to Ahoy Comics, you don’t want to miss this steller ride.

The History of Comics: The 1930’s to Now:

The big two companies, Marvel and DC Comics, have been around for almost 100 years. Starting out in the 1930’s and slowly growing into some of the most popular IP’s in recent memory. But how did all this happen? Where do you start? What is the best point of entry for new readers? Well, look no further than ‘The History of Comics: 1938 to Now.” This panel will cover the major creators, comics, and historical events over the past several decades and break it down into understandable bits for new readers. If you are unsure about comics and want to start somewhere, this is the panel for you!

Tea Monks and Tea Dragons: Fantastical Cozy Fiction Across All Age Groups by Riley Rhoder and Meaghan Burke:

Cozy Fantasy and Cozy Sci-fi are emerging subgenres that became popular during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kay O’Neill’s trilogy, The Tea Dragon Society, and Becky Chambers’ Monk and Robot duology are hallmarks in the Cozy Fantasy and Cozy Sci-fi genres Centered around the art of tea making, these novels provide real-life alternatives to the modern stress children and adults face.

Join Simonson & Stern as they pull back the curtain to reveal the secrets of collaborating on and coordinating the adventures of a character like Thor in a shared universe.

Spotlight on Innovation- featuring writer Chris Condon:

Chris Condon burst on the scene with comics like That Texas Blood and its Wild West spinoff, The Enfield Gang Massacre, which was selected as one of the best comics of 2023 by The Hollywood Reporter. His newest series, The Night People, adapts a literary icon’s work into the GN format. Join Condon for his first ITHACON to find out how he got here (to comics, not to Ithaca) and what’s next.

COSPLAY DISCLAIMERS

Cosplay Consent Policy:
 - COSPLAY DOES NOT MEAN CONSENT.
 - ITHACON has a ZERO TOLERANCE policy for anybody being touched or harassed, especially as a result of their cosplay.
 - Please report any danger or discomfort to any staff member of ITHACON, who will relay the offense to campus security.
 - Anyone who commits an offense will be removed from the convention.

Cosplay Rules:

 - Costumes and props must be checked during check-in to ensure the safety and appropriateness of them.
 - As ITHACON is a family event, cosplays should be appropriate and contain no lewd imagery and 
 - At certain times, due to crowds and safety issues, people in oversized costumes may be asked to leave heavily congested areas.
 

Cosplay Weapons Policy: 

 - All costume props and weapons must conform to state and federal law.
 - As Ithacon takes place on a college campus with its own weapons policy to protect students and staff, cosplaying attendees may only display their weapons in designated ITHACON spaces, where props and costume weapons are permitted
 - No real and/or functioning weapons are allowed.
 - Fake guns must have a clear, orange tip to signify that they are not real.
 - Projectile costume weapons must be rendered inoperable.
 - Prop swords, scythes, clubs, etc. must be blunted with a kind of foam.
 - Unrealistic and toy guns such as those sourced from modern children's programming (made of brightly coloured plastics, with flashing lights and stickers), or that are clearly science fiction based (phasers, plasma guns, blasters) are permitted; maximum size is 150cm.
 - Whips are permitted if kept coiled.
 - Shields are allowed, including lightweight metal, as long as they do not exceed 3 feet in height or width or have any sharp edges
 - Do not bring any items restricted or prohibited from being carried by law
 - If you are asked to give up your weapon, you MUST COMPLY. Your weapon will be returned to you once you leave the convention.
 - If you are not willing to comply with these policies, please do not bring your costume props or weapons to ITHACON.
 - ITHACON reserves the right to remove any individual in violation of these terms at any time.
